The 944 S2 16 Valve 3.0 litre engine was described by Porsche at the time as being the most powerful normally aspirated 4 cylinder engine in the world, offering extreme flexibility and refinement - a true sports car for every occasion. The car had nearly even front to rear weight distribution (50.7% front/49.3% rear) thanks to the rear transaxle balancing out the engine in the front.
